Why I Started the Glen Adnam Cancer Comfort Basket Foundation

The Glen Adnam Cancer Comfort Basket Foundation was created from love, loss, and a desire to make sure no one facing cancer feels forgotten or alone.

My dad, Glen Adnam, faced tonsil squamous cell carcinoma. His cancer journey eventually included metastasis to his bones and liver. Watching someone you love go through cancer changes you. It affects the patient, but it also reaches into every part of the family.

There are appointments, treatments, difficult conversations, long drives, moments of hope, and days filled with uncertainty. There are also caregivers quietly carrying responsibilities, family members trying to stay strong, and healthcare teams doing everything they can to provide care and comfort.

After losing my dad in 2019, I knew I wanted to do something meaningful in his memory.

I did not want his story to end with cancer.

I wanted the love he gave, the life he lived, and the impact he had on our family to continue through something that could help others.

Where the Comfort Baskets Began

The first comfort basket event began in 2021 as a way to support people facing breast cancer. The idea was simple: collect thoughtful items that could provide comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

A soft blanket, warm socks, lip balm, a journal, a snack, or a small encouraging message may seem like simple things, but when someone is sitting through treatment or coping with a new diagnosis, those small comforts can mean so much.

They remind someone that they are seen.

They remind them that people care.

Most importantly, they remind them that they are not alone.

The project continued to grow, but life also brought changes. Our family welcomed more children, and the project had seasons when it needed to slow down. Even during those quieter seasons, the vision never disappeared.

The desire to help people facing cancer remained in my heart.

In 2026, I decided it was time to bring the project back with a larger purpose and a long-term vision.

That is how the Glen Adnam Cancer Comfort Basket Foundation began.

More Than a Basket

The baskets are an important part of the foundation, but this mission is about more than the items placed inside them.

It is about creating connection during a time that can feel incredibly isolating.

It is about supporting adult cancer patients, children facing cancer, caregivers, grieving families, and the healthcare workers who walk alongside patients every day.

Our vision includes several types of support:

  • Adult cancer comfort baskets
  • Pediatric cancer comfort baskets
  • Caregiver comfort baskets
  • Memorial support baskets
  • Healthcare team appreciation baskets

Each basket will be thoughtfully created with the person receiving it in mind.

We want every basket to carry a message:

You matter.
Your story matters.
You are supported.
You are not facing this alone.

Supporting Saskatchewan Communities

The foundation has a special focus on Southeast Saskatchewan, while also hoping to reach patients, families, cancer centres, hospitals, and support organizations throughout the province.

People living in rural communities often travel significant distances for cancer appointments and treatment. Families may face added expenses, time away from work, childcare challenges, and long days on the road.

Community support matters.

When local individuals, families, schools, businesses, healthcare workers, and organizations work together, even small contributions can create a meaningful impact.

A donated item can become part of a basket.

A business sponsorship can help support several patients.

A volunteer can help pack, organize, deliver, photograph, write, fundraise, or share the foundation’s message.

Every act of kindness becomes part of something larger.

Continuing My Dad’s Legacy

This foundation carries my dad’s name, but it also carries the values I learned from him.

Family. Community. Kindness. Strength. Showing up for people when they need it most.

Grief has taught me that we cannot always control what happens to the people we love. We can, however, choose what we carry forward.

I choose to carry forward my dad’s memory through compassion.

I choose to turn pain into purpose.

I choose to create something that lets another patient or family know that someone is thinking about them.

The Glen Adnam Cancer Comfort Basket Foundation is still growing. There will be partnerships to build, volunteers to welcome, funds to raise, baskets to pack, and stories to share.

But every meaningful mission begins with one step.

For me, that step began with my dad.

It began with love.

And it continues with the hope that, through this foundation, no one facing cancer will ever feel like they have to face it alone.
